Sophia S. Wang, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Division of Cancer Etiology at the City of Hope and a full member of the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Wang earned her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She subsequently spent two years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer.
For nearly a decade since, Dr. Wang led epidemiologic research as an investigator at the National Cancer Institute (NIH) where she was tenured in 2008 and where she received the NIH Award of Merit as well as the NCI Mentoring Award. Her major scientific contributions continue to be in the field of molecular epidemiology where she has focused on research in cervical cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and understanding the molecular and genetic contributions to cancer causation.
Within the California Teachers Study (CTS), Dr. Wang continues her research in lymphoma and other blood-related cancers and is seeking to understand the role of immunity and inflammation in cancers among women. She is also expanding the scope of her research in the CTS to other chronic diseases for which disease burdens disproportionately affect women.
