Susan Neuhausen

Susan L. Neuhausen, Ph.D. is the Morris and Horowitz Families Professor in Cancer Etiology and Outcomes Research in the Department of Population Sciences at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope. She received her Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Geneticsand then took her acquired skills to work on discovering genes that cause disease in people. In 1992, Dr. Neuhausen started her research career as part of a collaborative team who discovered the breast cancer genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2.

Dr. Neuhausen’s research is centered on identifying genetic and environmental stressors that predispose to disease, with primary focus on breast and ovarian cancers and celiac disease. For prevention, she believes that a key is to better understand why certain individuals are more prone to develop specific illnesses and then to design programs for targeted interventions to help keep these people healthy.

Dr. Neuhausen has been involved in the California Teachers Study for the past 4 years providing direction in the genetic and molecular epidemiology aspects of studies. Her hope is that the CTS studies will add to the collective knowledge that will one day re-define cancer as a non-lethal disease.
